Mr. Rafael Cantu

My name is Rafael Cantu and I will be starting my 30th year as a mathematics teacher. I graduated from Port Isabel High School in 1984 and attended Texas A & M University at Kingsville, where I received my Bachelors of Science degree in Secondary Education in the fall of 1989, majoring in Kinesiology and minoring in Mathematics.

My teaching career started at Los Fresnos CISD at the Junior high level, teaching 7th and 8th grade math, while coaching football and basketball.  This allowed me time in the spring to volunteer coaching Little League baseball from 1990-1992, coaching my nephew and his friends in Port Isabel.  In the fall of 1992, I was promoted to the Varsity football staff at Los Fresnos High School where my  second coaching position assignment was assisting in the baseball program.  My teaching assignment included mainly Algebra I and Algebra II.  This would be my role for the next 10 years.

In the Spring of 2002, I accepted a position at Port Isabel High School.  My coaching assignment would remain the same, coaching football and baseball, but my teaching assignment became mainly teaching Geometry and Geometry Pre-AP.  I would continue in this role until the Spring of 2018, with a one year change during the 2008-2009 school year, where for a family situation, I taught at Lackland ISD at Stacey Jr./Sr. High.  At Stacey Jr./Sr. High, I taught 7th grade math and Algebra I.

Besides my passion for coaching and teaching, and my enjoyment of sports and mathematics, I truly enjoy outdoor activities, solving logic puzzles and problems and traveling.  A couple of items from my bucket list that I have fulfilled is attending a baseball game at every Major League Baseball Park and traveling to every state of the United States.

I am truly excited about my next assignment, joining the Natalia Mustang family, and look forward to the upcoming school year and working with and achieving success with my students.
